January 16, 1929 ~ April 29, 2022 (age 93)

Obituary

Virginia Dawson, age 93, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022, at Fairway View Neighborhoods.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Pastor Dennis O’Neill will officiate the service and interment will be at Mound Cemetery.

Virginia Lee (Voeltz) Dawson was born on January 16, 1929, in Beulah, ND, to Glen and Alice (Bergstad) Voeltz. She moved with her family to Big Stone City, SD, in 1938. Virginia attended elementary school in Grant County, SD, and attended one year of high school in Ortonville, MN. She attended three years of high school at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, graduating on June 8, 1947.

On June 30, 1947, Virginia was united in marriage with Don Dawson at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank, SD. Together, they were blessed with four children: Monica, Cathi, Merle and Don. Don and Virginia farmed in Roberts County, SD, until 1956 when they moved to Ortonville to run the Orpheum Theater.

Virginia was an excellent cook. She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and was known for her infamous, homemade buttermilk doughnuts. They were the best you’d every eat in your life! Virginia could (and did many, many times) catch the most and biggest fish, fillet them, and fry them up before you knew what happened!

Known as “The Avon Lady” in Ortonville for many years, Virginia was “Top Sales Lady” a number of times. She loved meeting people in their homes and showing them latest and greatest products. Virginia made many life-long friendships during her Avon years. She loved to play cards, especially Bridge. At one time, Virginia belonged to four or five Bridge Clubs.

Virginia had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. The staff at Harvest Trail have some great stories about how she surprised them with her wit.

As faith was important to Virginia, she was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville where she served on “Sarah Circle” and was a funeral group chairperson.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her children: Monica (Gary) Voegtli of Ortonville, MN; Cathi (Jim) Halbe of Morris, MN; and Don Dawson (Peggy Plageman) of Minneota, MN; son-in-law, Elden Rasmussen of Richmond, MN; brother, Millard Voeltz; eight grandchildren: Zac (Sara) Kietzman, Leah Kietzman, Karla (Josh Bischoff) Kietzman, Aaron (Kristin) Voegtli, Alison Voegtli, Donald Dawson, Jacob (Misty) Dawson and Jaimie Plageman; 11 great-grandchildren: Riley, Zoe, and Dylan Rethamel; Audrey, Caleb, and Nathan Voegtli; Elliott, Lucy, and Rose Bischoff; Carter and Hannah Dawson; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Glen and Alice Voeltz; husband, Don Dawson; daughter, Merle Lynn Rasmussen; great-grandchild, Silas Bischoff; sisters: Gloria Hausauer and Robyn Wulff; brothers: James Voeltz, Gary Voeltz, and Keith Voeltz; sisters-in-law: Susie Dawson Nelson, Rosemary Dawson Meyers, and Mary Tillman Voeltz; and brothers-in-law: Bob Hausauer and Bill Wulff.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations in Virginia’s name be made to Big Stone Area Healthcare Foundation.
