Vicky L. Smith was born June 4, 1957 in Webster, SD to Vernon & Iona (Brattlid) Pearson. She passed away on April 11, 2020 at the age of 62 at Avantara in Milbank, SD, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Vicky was the fourth child of Vernon & Iona Pearson, spending much of her childhood outside chasing after her older and younger siblings. Growing up on the family farm she enjoyed riding horses, cross country skiing, and helping with the farm work. She graduated from Summit High School in May 1975. She had a great love for animals, and it was the passion that led her to Eastern Wyoming College, Torrington, WY, for animal health & veterinary science. She soon longed for her family & friends and returned to South Dakota where she worked at the Coffee Cup and at Brooks Corner. It was while working at Brooks Corner that she reconnected with Roger Smith. They were joined together in marriage on February 13, 1982, during a small ceremony at the Chapel of the Hills in Rapid City, SD. They returned to Marvin, SD, to start their new life together. They purchased their farm in 1983 where they raised their five children. She loved the outdoors; she could be found gardening, helping Roger with the farm work, riding horse, kayaking, canning and freezing her garden vegetables, or taking photos. Their farm was often the subject of her photos: beautiful sunrises, vibrant sunsets, or images of the sun shining on the fences and trees after an ice storm. She was always behind the camera capturing photos of her children and their activities, family events, or everyday life on the farm.

Vicky was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Summit, SD. Throughout the years she served on the church council – holding several positions, teaching Sunday School and volunteering to be the Sunday School superintendent for several years while her kids were growing up. Vicky was well known for her “Vicky Bars” – a bar recipe that only she mastered. She was an excellent lefsa maker and lutefisk cooker, skills she learned from her mom and passed on to her children. Her other talents included guitar playing, singing, drawing, crafting, and woodworking. Every Christmas Vicky created a new Christmas ornament using materials from around the farm and her imagination. Those Christmas ornaments are keepsakes her family will have to remember her by.

Vicky started her career with the Post Office as a part-time postal worker in Marvin, SD, before becoming the full-time postmaster in 1987. She retired in 2012 after 25 years of service. Through her work at the post office she built a great relationship with the brothers of Blue Cloud Abbey. She had a love for baking and when the brothers were looking for a new bread baker, she was thrilled to take the job.

Vicky will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Roger of Marvin, SD; her children: Kayla & Michael Aman of Brookings, SD; Andrew & Sarah Smith of Castlewood, SD; Jacquelyn & Michael Adolph of Summit, SD; Sarah Smith of Marvin, SD; and Sidney Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; her siblings: LaVonne & Duane Christofferson of Watertown, SD; Greg & Colleen Pearson of Ortley, SD; Monty & Nancy Pearson of Summit, ND; Mark & Becky Pearson of Waubay, SD; and Kari Pearson of Bismarck, ND. She leaves behind eight grandchildren with another one on the way, and many nieces and nephews.

Vicky was preceded in death by her parents: Vernon and Iona Pearson; her in-laws: Dewey and Phyllis Smith; and brother Vincent Pearson.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date once life has an opportunity to return to a new normal.
