Verne Foss

Verne Foss, age 91, of Milbank, SD, peacefully passed away on May 16, 2020, in Tucson, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank.  A video of family photos will start at 2:15 p.m.  All family and friends are invited to attend.

Verne Daryl Foss was born on April 3, 1929, in Milbank, SD.  He was the son of Albert and Mamie (Boerger) Foss. Verne attended school in Milbank.  He was a farm laborer with his uncle from 1947 – 1950.  He then worked for 13 years at Community Oil Station in Milbank.  In 1963, Verne attended the Man Power Training School for Appliance and Refrigeration at South East Area Vo-Tech School in Sioux Falls, SD.  Upon completion, Verne returned to Milbank and started his own service business in appliance and refrigeration, Foss Refrigeration.  In 1976, Verne added sales to the business and sold Whirlpool Appliances.  Verne sold the business in 1986.

Verne worked as a substitute rural mail carrier from 1964 until 1980 and a full-time rural mail carrier on Route #1 from 1981 until 1990.  In January of 1990 Verne suffered a stroke which forced his retirement after 25 years of service.

Verne was united in marriage with Peggy Joan Veale in 1950.  He later married Beverly Ann Karges on June 18, 1961, in Milbank.

Verne was a faithful and active member of the Milbank Fire Department where he served for 31 years.  He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served as trustee for six years.  He was also a faithful volunteer and head usher at the church.  He was a member of the Milbank City Council for four years and a long-time member of the Milbank Lion’s Club for 41 years.

Verne played softball for 30 years!  He loved to roller-skate, play cards, camp, and fish.  He and Bev enjoyed old time dancing, square dancing, and loved spending their winters in warmer climates.  Verne especially loved his family and was proud of each one of them.  He also greeted friends with “MORNIN” no matter the time of day!

Verne’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 59 years, Beverly of Milbank, SD; his children: Gary (Vicki) Foss of Hermosa, SD; Steven (Bridgett) Foss of Rapid City, SD; Angela (Barry) Olson of Grand Rapids, MN; Daryl (Lana) Foss of Harker Heights, TX; Karla (Jim) DeVaal of Milbank, SD; and Joan Braesch of Prior Lake, MN; son-in-law, Neil Pauli of Twin Brooks, SD; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Foss, Charlotte Mitchell, and Marles Kelly; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Mamie; two daughters: Theresa (and husband Kerry) Malkerson, and Cheryl Pauli; brother, Merl Foss; and brothers-in-law: Jerry Mitchell and Asa Kelly.
