After high school, he served in the South Dakota National Guard and went to work at Old Home Bakery in Watertown, SD. Leon was transferred to Rapid City, SD, and again to South Sioux City, NE. He settled outside of Hubbard, NE. He retired from the bakery and began working as the weed superintendent for Dakota County in Nebraska. After retiring from Dakota County, he served as a custodian at South Sioux City High School for a time and at Salem Lutheran Church until his passing. On November 27, 1971, Leon was united in marriage with Patsy Kraai. The couple was blessed with three children: Cindy, Cathy, and Randy.

Leon was an active member of the American Legion Post 97 in Homer, NE. He was very involved with Salem Lutheran Church and the communities of Homer and Hubbard, NE.
