Larry Roggenbuck, age 85, of Big Stone City, SD, passed away on May 1, 2021, in Salt Lake City, UT, with his family by his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City, SD.  Padre Dav`id Garza will celebrate the mass. Burial with military honors will be at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Lunch will be served following the burial at Big Stone American Legion.

Larry was born in Milbank, SD, on January 24, 1936, to George Leopold Roggenbuck and Scholastica (Brotzel) Roggenbuck. The family lived on a farm two miles west of Rosen, MN, until 1942, then they moved to Big Stone City, SD. Larry attended S.t Joseph School in Rosen through second grade. He was a member of the 1944 Communion Class. He attended Big Stone City School and graduated in 1954. After a 2-year stint at North Star Granite Quarry, Larry joined the U.S. Army for artillery training at Ft Hood, TX, and Ft Knox, KY. In 1957 he traveled to Regensburg, Germany with the 7th Calvary for an 18- month assignment. Upon arrival, Larry enrolled in Munich’s Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, graduating as a Staff Sergeant. In 1958, he enrolled at Northern State College and earned a BA in English and Elementary Education, minoring in Geography, graduating in 1961. He earned a master’s degree from SDSU in 1972. He taught grades 5 and 6 in public schools for 33 years in Sioux City, IA, and Ortonville, MN, retiring in 1994. He was the owner/operator of Roggenbuck Painting and Tree Trimming for 50 years.

He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church for 77 years. He was a charter member of Grant County Pheasants Forever, founded in 2000. He was a life member of the Big Stone American Legion serving on several committees: color guard, firing squad, vice commander, past historian, post Americanism Officer and Board of Directors. He wrote a 15-page brochure detailing the history of Gertje-Van Lith Post 229. He was a 29- year member of Big Stone City Development Corporation, serving as President for several years.

His hobbies included hunting (doves, ducks, deer and pheasants). He enjoyed fishing, hiking, bird study, reading and gardening.

He is survived by his children: Diane Roggenbuck of Cupertino, CA; Carol (Ralph) Medina Mesa, AZ; Andre Roggenbuck of Eagan, MN; Heidi Roggenbuck of West Valley City, UT; and Laura Roggenbuck of Berlin, Germany; grandchildren: Brittany Roggenbuck of Mesa, AZ; Regina, Anna and Ahmet Aybay of Cupertino, CA; and Ethan Roggenbuck of Eagan, MN. Siblings Jim of Lake Benton, MN; Bettie (Jim) Holman of Crosby, MN; Mary Smith of Zimmerman, MN; Mel (Sandy) of Atkin, MN; Bernie (Elsie) of Willmar, MN. Special friend Nate Kettner, Murdock, MN; and Sue Christensen, Big Stone City, SD, his partner of almost  21 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine, and brothers Maurie and Gene.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations by made to Pheasants Forever.
