Carol attended high School at St. Mary’s Academy in Graceville, MN. She graduated with honors and was named Valedictorian of the Class of 1952. She spent her freshman year of college attending St. Benedicts in St. Joseph, MN, and also attended Saint Catherine's University in St. Paul. Carol entered the convent and served as a Sister of Saint Joseph (Sister Mary Laurel) and as a schoolteacher for 15 years. She enjoyed working at the Red Cross and Cedar-Riverside in the years following her time in the convent.

In 1971, Carol was united in marriage to James Church. To this union, a daughter, Laura was born in 1973.

She was an author of a series of books for young readers: six biographies of famous women published by Greenhaven Press. She later worked to assist Geneticist Robert Gorlin, serving as copy editor for his medical textbooks. Carol worked at the University of Minnesota for 20 years where she was a leader in the AFSCME union.

It was in the year of 1996 that Carol married the love of her life, Glenn Rose. He was a florist and robotics engineer. They were perfectly matched.
