Carol Layne, age 72, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Mundwiler and Larson Funeral Chapel in Ortonville.

Carol Jean (Barnhardt) Layne was born on June 17, 1949, in Ortonville, MN, to Woodrow and Phyllis (Laudenschlager) Barnhardt. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith. As a young lady of 12-years-old, Carol was given the assignment of drawing a picture of what Thanksgiving meant to her. While other children in her class drew pictures of turkeys and pilgrims, Carol drew a picture of Jesus and a church. Her picture was selected to be featured in the newspaper. 25 years after she would have graduated from high school, Carol earned her General Education Diploma with honors in 1992.

On October 30, 1965, Carol was united in marriage with Jimmie Layne in Graceville, MN. To this union, four children were born. Carol was very proud of her family and cherished the time she got to spend with Jimmie, her children, and her grandchildren.

Carol was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ortonville. She was secretary and treasurer for Sunset View Association for some time and was also secretary for the Big Stone Cruisers Car Club for many years. Carol worked for the Ortonville Community Center, for the apple farm, and most recently was the manager for several apartment buildings.

During her leisure time, Carol loved going to car shows especially the “Back to the 50’s” car show. She enjoyed going to garage sales, doing puzzles, and everything purple. She was very good at trivia and never missed watching “Wheel of Fortune” ….many members of her family were lectured about calling her from 6:30 to 7 p.m. because that was her time to watch. Carol was known for her legendary Halloween parties. She often times made up games and fun activities for her guests. She was the reining “Kings in the Corner” champion of her family. Carol had a big heart and a soft spot for dogs of all kinds.

Carol is survived by her husband, Jimmie of Ortonville, MN; children: Joni Leuthardt of Alexandria, MN; Wayne (Beatrice) Layne of St. Cloud, MN; and Sheri Anne (Chris) Layne-Laramie of St. Cloud, MN; five grandchildren: Justin Leuthardt, Ashely Leuthardt, Sean (Kayla) Leuthardt, Miranda Leuthardt, and Kyle Layne; brother-in-law, Tommy Smithwick; and sisters-in-law: Beverly Smithwick and Norma Clark.
