Vida “Vi” Joan (Perna) Hoeke was born in Deer Creek Township of Otter Tail County, MN, on January 17, 1934, to Toivo and Hulda (Hyrynkangas) Perna. Vi's early years were characterized by resilience and determination as she began her education in a humble one-room schoolhouse, where she bravely learned to speak English.

Vi proudly graduated from New York Mills High School with the Class of 1951, a testament to her commitment to education and growth. On June 2, 1951, Vi was united in marriage with John J. Hoeke in Wadena, MN. Together, they were blessed with four children: Vikki, Vonne, Joe, and Jack.

As a devoted homemaker, Vi’s greatest joy came from her family, especially her children and her cherished grandchildren, with whom she eagerly spent her time, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter. A dedicated caregiver, Vi selflessly supported her husband, John, tending to their farm and assisting in the daily care of their cattle, showcasing her unwavering spirit and commitment to family values.

In the latter part of her life, after John entered a nursing facility, Vi found a renewed purpose in volunteering. She provided companionship, assistance, and warmth to residents, enriching their days with her kind spirit. Her remarkable contributions to the community were recognized when she was honored with the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award by the South Dakota Healthcare Association in 2006.

Vi was infamous for her delicious homemade bread and caramel rolls, delights that filled her home with warmth and comfort. An adventurous soul, she took up jogging in her 50s, showcasing her passion for life and health. A talented musician, Vi learned to play the harmonica, piano, and accordion by ear, sharing her melodies with family and friends. She loved card games, particularly Canasta and Peanuts, and had a keen eye for decorating her home, creating a welcoming and beautiful environment for all. Vi was immensely proud of her Finnish heritage and held a deep love for America.

Left to cherish Vi’s memory are her daughters: Vikki (Gary) Linder, and Vonne (George) Mathers; her sons: Joe Hoeke, and Jack Hoeke; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, John; her parents; and her siblings: Vernon Perna, Vivian Neuvonen, Marvin Perna, Morris Perna, Dennis Perna, Alvin Perna, James Perna, Verla Snethen, and Vanette Dykoff.

Vi's family wishes to express their greatest gratitude to the staff at Peaceful Pines Senior Living and St. William's Care Center for all of their compassionate care for Vi in the last few years.
