He was born December 13, 1943, in Ortonville, MN. A native of Milbank, SD, Richard spent his childhood aiding his family in tending the Arnold farm. It was there he developed his interest in animal science, eventually becoming a youth judge for 4-H. Upon graduation from Milbank High School, he went on to South Dakota State University, earning his undergraduate degree and later his Ph.D.
Richard owned and operated Southwest Nutrition for decades, and this allowed him to travel the world. He treasured these experiences, often sharing his stories from across the globe with friends and family. From the Great Wall of China to witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall, Richard savored his opportunities to see the world. His reflections on visits to over 40 countries live on in his self-published books. Richard particularly enjoyed sharing his experience visiting the Holy Land.
Richard had a passion for singing, from barbershop quartets to singing in family weddings; it was a gift he loved to share. Richard contributed to his community by singing in his church choir at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX. He also found great purpose in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and mission trips with his church. He enjoyed being active and participated in what he lovingly called Silver Slippers (Silver Sneakers) senior fitness programs for many years.
He is survived by his children: David (Stacy) Arnold of Olathe, KS, Dustin (Jeannie) Arnold of Olathe, KS, Sarah Arnold of New York, NY, Rachel (Bryan) Murphrey of Greenville, NC; and stepson, Chance Killpack (Amy) of Greenville, NC; grandchildren: Benjamin Arnold, Trent (Sydney) Arnold, Zachary Arnold, Natasha Arnold, and Hannah Murphrey; siblings: Kyleen (Robert) Andrews, Mark (Marilyn) Arnold, Myla (Scott) Johnson, all of Watertown, SD; and Debbie Eckhart of Mira Loma, CA. He is also survived by former wives: Vicki (Tuttle) Arnold and Sharon (Lynn) Arnold.
Richard is preceded in death by his loving parents: Ardyth (Johnston) and Theodore Arnold, and his brother-in-law, Marc Eckhart.
Lovingly written by Richard's family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity.
