Phyllis Evjen

Funeral services Mrs. Phyllis Schultz Evjen, age 80, of Stockholm, SD, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2006, at the Elim Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm, SD. Pastor Mark Chapman will officiate. Phyllis died on Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD. Family members are asked to meet in the church basement by 10:30 a.m. Saturday to attend services. The pianist was Verla Peterson. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Friday from 4-6 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Saturday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Matt Schultz, Andy Schultz, Dan Schultz, Cal Tuma, Kenny Evjen, Bobby Kinder, Joel Kinder, Greg Koch, and Bob Christensen. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, rural Stockholm. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Elim Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm.
Phyllis was born on August 29, 1925, at Stockholm, SD, the daughter of Elmer N. and Selma (Erickson) Eclov. Following her father's death, her mother married Arvid Johnson. She was baptized in 1925 by Reverend Sigfrid Carlson. Phyllis was confirmed in October 1940 by Reverend C.H.B. Peterson at the Elim Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm. She attended elementary school in Stockholm. Phyllis graduated from Strandburg High School and the Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, SD.
She was united in marriage to Alvin Schultz on June 10, 1946, at the Stockholm Schoolhouse. Alvin died on October 12, 1983. Phyllis married Raynard Evjen on October 21, 1989. They resided in Stockholm.
Phyllis worked at Nugen and Williams Insurance Company in Sioux Falls from 1944-47; Stockholm Refrigeration from 1973-81; the U.S. Postal Service in Stockholm as a career clerk from 1955 until her appointment as Postmaster at Stockholm on July 11, 1981. She retired in 1989.
She was a lifelong member of the Elim Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm. Phyllis was active in the Elim Covenant Women where she was a past chairperson. She was also active in Family League. Phyllis served the Sunday school there in many capacities such as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, and church secretary. She was also a member of the Harmony Homemakers Extension Club, the National Association of Postmasters, and the Grant County Historical Society.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Ray, Stockholm, SD; her son Steve Schultz and his wife Nita, Fergus Falls, MN and their three boys, Matt and his wife Shelley, and their daughter Megan; Andy and his fiancAC. Teri Berg and their daughter Jadyn; and Dan; her daughter Wendy Tuma and her husband John, Northfield, MN, and their two children, Cal and Molly; her sister, Jean Larsen and husband David, Chicago, Ill; Ray's children: Elaine Koch and husband Glen, Sioux Falls, SD; Lois Harrington, Clear Lake, SD; Ardis Evjen, Watertown, SD; and Mary Kinder and husband Bob, Stockholm; Daniel Evjen and wife Paula, Puyallup, WA, and Kenneth Evjen and wife Connie, rural Stockholm; and Ray's eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Selma Eclov, her stepfather Arvid Johnson, her first husband Alvin Schultz, and two brothers, Dayton and Lyle Eclov.
