Omar Halvorson, age 85, of Summit, SD, passed away on June 19, 2023.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the funeral service. Pastor Janet Miller will officiate, and burial will be at Hope Lutheran Cemetery.
Omar Paul Halvorson was born on June 16, 1938, in Watertown, SD. He was the son of Herman D. and Elise C. (Lee) Halvorson. Omar grew up in the Summit area and graduated from Summit High School in 1956. On August 5, 1957, he was united in marriage with Janice Westberg in Chicago, Illinois. Together, they were blessed with 65 years of marriage and three children: Robert, Robin, and Rebecca.
Omar attended South Dakota State University in Brookings for two years. He worked for ASCS/FSA as a fieldman, and later, managed the Grant County office. After his retirement, he continued raising crops on the family farm. He was a horse lover; he enjoyed raising and showing Quarter Horses. He enjoyed driving in the country, checking local crops and fields.
In his earlier years, Omar enjoyed hunting. He was a 4-H leader and started a local club in Grant County. He loved his children and grandchildren and followed their many sporting events and activities. He was a lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church in Summit, where he was baptized, confirmed, and served as an usher.
Omar is survived by his wife, Janice; son, Robert Halvorson of Summit, SD; daughters: Robin (Todd) Bortnem of Brookings, SD; and Rebecca Halvorson Woodland of Nevada; two grandchildren: Gavin (Cassy) Woodland of Minnesota; and Kelsey (Matt) Boetcher of Nevada; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Woodland.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Herman and Elise; sisters: Donna Lu, and LuAnn; and brother, David.
