Funeral services for Lois M. Spiering, 77, of rural Revillo, SD, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend Keith Bicknase will officiate. Lois died on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at her farm home. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:30 a.m. Saturday to attend services. The organist will be Kristy Tostenson. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue at the church on Saturday one hour before the services. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters. Active pallbearers will be Kent Beyer, Grant Street, Jason Street, Geoff Street, Terry Meister, and Aaron Meister. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery north of Albee, South Dakota.
Lois was born on December 14, 1931, in Madison, Minnesota, to Harold and Marion (Hilts) Street. She attended rural school and graduated from Revillo High School. After attending Northern Normal at Aberdeen, she taught in rural schools in Grant County for several years and one year in LaBolt.
She was united in marriage to Eugene Spiering on December 14, 1951, at Milbank. She joined the Lutheran faith when she married and belonged first to St. Paul's of Albee and later to St. John's in Revillo. Most recently, she became a member of Emanuel Lutheran in Milbank.
Lois was devoted to farming and rural life, helping with the farm work whenever needed. She liked to garden and sew. She also enjoyed many other activities including bowling, square dancing, and traveling. She was a member of the Old Mill Twirlers square dance club for many years until she was unable to participate. She belonged to the Minnesota Chapter of the International Flying Farmers, serving as chapter queen in 1989. In her earlier years, she was a member of the I Go-You-Go Extension Club. Her travels took her to every continent except Antarctica. She had been to Mexico, South America, and Alaska several times. She loved and enjoyed her nine granddaughters and one grandson.
Lois is survived by her husband, Eugene, rural Revillo; her three daughters, JoEllen (Bob) Heffron, Milbank; Cynthia (David) Rieck, Janesville, Wisconsin; and Linda Brewer, Lincoln, Nebraska; her son, Steven (Bonita) Spiering, Milbank; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Arland Spiering and wife Elaine of Lake Mary, Florida, and Douglas Beyer of Revillo; two sisters-in-law, Carol Spiering of Biloxi, Mississippi, and Glenna Spiering of Omaha, Nebraska; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Norma Jean Beyer.
