He was baptized on November 30, 1924, and confirmed on June 5, 1938. In 1942 he graduated from Ortonville High School and joined his father in the family plumbing business. October of 1943 found Leonard in active duty with the U.S. Navy onboard a PT boat in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946 and returned home. At that time, Leonard went into business with his father, forming L. B. Olson and Son. Upon his father's death, the name was changed to Olson Plumbing and Heating. Leonard proudly obtained his Master Plumber License in December of 1973. His business was important to him and his customers always came first!

On June 9, 1957, Leonard and Evelyn Annette Skoglund were united in marriage by Rev. Harold Ward at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. They were blessed with four children.

A man of service, Leonard found purpose in many local organizations. He served as chief of the Ortonville Fire Department, commander of the VFW, served on the Ortonville City Council, was a charter member of the Ortonville Jaycees, and active in the Chautauqua Concert Association. A lifelong member of First English Lutheran Church he particularly enjoyed The Squares Bible Study Group. Leonard was an exceptional wood worker and his craft was generously shared.
