June Spahr

June 3, 1923 — December 9, 2005

June was born on June 3, 1923, in Kilborn Township, Grant County, South Dakota, the daughter of Newton and Mata (Fenner) Grothe. In 1929, she moved with her family to Milbank. Her mother Mata died in 1930. June then lived with her uncle and aunt, LeRoy and Alma Smith, in Milbank. She graduated from Milbank High School in 1941. In 1943 she attended business school and worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for an insurance company and garment manufacturing company in Minneapolis and later for McGowan Lumber Company in Milbank. She was united in marriage to Arvid C. Stengel on February 11, 1945, in Milbank. Following marriage, the couple farmed northeast of Milbank. She was the bookkeeper for all of the farm enterprises that the two of them undertook. Arvid died on December 8, 1991. June married Wesley Spahr on September 28, 1997, in Milbank. They enjoyed rides in the country and travels to their families. Wes died in 2000.
June was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Milbank where she was active in Sunday school. During her marriage to Arvid she was a helpmate in farming and 4-H leadership. June was also active in Extension Clubs both at the district and state level. She also belonged to a local sewing club. June loved her family, friends, and church. June enjoyed bike riding, hiking, cross-country skiing, swimming, crocheting, cooking, and traveling.
Survivors include her three sons, Douglas Stengel and wife Gaylene, Timothy Stengel and wife Susan, and Calvin Stengel and wife Rhonda, all of rural Milbank; five grandsons; one granddaughter; three great grandsons; four stepsons, Ronald Spahr and wife Helen, Memphis, TN; Russell Spahr and wife Pat, Mankato, MN; Reverend Roger Spahr and wife Joan, Watertown, SD; and Reverend Randy Spahr and wife Diane, Wahpeton, ND; twelve step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Marion Stengel Born, Coal City, Illinois; four sibling-cousins, Earl Smith, Colorado Springs, CO; Jim Smith and wife Velma, Bellevue, WA; Joan Angerhofer, Rapid City, SD; and Arlo Smith and wife Mugs, Aberdeen, SD; other cousins and relatives.
June was preceded in death by her parents, her uncle and aunt, LeRoy and Alma Smith; two husbands; one sister Nadine Curry; one brother, Donald Grothe; and one grandson, Seth Stengel.
