John Edmund (Ed) Kiernat was born on January 30, 1927, to parents Frank Xavier and Gladys (Stutler) Kiernat in Ortonville where he lived a very happy childhood. Ed graduated from Ortonville High School in 1945 and was drafted for World War II the same year. After the war he attended trade school in the cities for Electronics.

On October 6, 1952, Ed was united in marriage to Elaine (Renie) Larson at St. John's Catholic Church in Ortonville. To this union two children were born. He also owned and operated the Deputy Registrar in Ortonville. Ed was also a life time member of the VFW, Moose Lodge, and the American Legion. Ed volunteered on the Ortonville Fire Department for 26 years.

After retirement, Ed and Renie traveled extensively, but his main pleasure was the time spent with Renie and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In his spare time, Ed enjoyed working in his garden, boating, hunting, fishing, sodoku puzzles, and grilling. He also volunteered at many church activities through the years.

Cherishing his memory is his daughter Diane (Brad) Rieck; his grandchildren: Sara (Nolan) Fetters and Derek (Meghan Nelson) Rieck; his great-grandchildren: Daunte and Brantley Fetters, and Haylee Rieck; his sister Marlene ("Tottie" Kiernat) Yaeger; brother-in-law, Johnny (Arlene) Larson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
