Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Mundwiler Funeral Home. A prayer service will start at 4:30 p.m. with visitation following from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Pastor Chris Davis will officiate, and burial will be at Milbank City Cemetery.

Herman Gust Hein, Jr. was born at home on March 29, 1937, in Otrey Township of Big Stone County, Minnesota. He was the son of Margaret Elizabeth (Fosher) and Herman Gust Hein. He attended school in Odessa, MN, and farmed with his dad and brother. In 1954, Herman enlisted in the National Guard. He later joined the U.S. Navy Reserve on November 28, 1955. He was called to active duty on November 1, 1957, and was honorably discharged on October 10, 1962.
On September 19, 1958, Herman was united in marriage with Shirley Ann Dockter. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage. Together, they resided in Milbank and raised their five children.
Herman started his working career with the railroad for eight years. He then began his over 48 year long career as an over-the-road trucker working for Bracht Transportation, Hurley Trucking, Ron Kottke Trucking, and Berkner Excavating. He was a longtime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and an active member of the VFW. He enjoyed coffee time with friends at Hardees, The Millstone, and The Bank coffee shop.
Herman is survived by his daughters: Vicki Anderson of Aberdeen, SD; Nancy “Bunny” (Steve Kane) Hein of South Shore, SD; and Lisa Hein of Aberdeen, SD; sons: Tim Hein of St. Paul, MN; and Dan Hein of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Tony Anderson, Cory (Jacqueline) Anderson, Travis (Jessica) Anderson, Sara Anderson, Dillon Anderson, Roxy Hein, Courtney (Joshua) LaPage, Alysen Hein, and Ashley (Lincoln) Thurman; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Hein; sisters: Pat Guse and Janice Rethke; brother, Bob Hein; and an infant daughter.
