He grew up on the family farm and attended country school north of Wheaton until 8th grade. Herb worked on the family farm until he joined the U.S. Navy on November 24, 1942. He was proud to be a USS Leary survivor during WWII; the destroyer on which he was deployed sank in battle on December 24, 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Together they were blessed with 49 years of marriage and two sons: Kenneth and Douglas. Herb farmed with his father-in-law from 1956 to 1960, and then farmed on his own until his retirement in 1985. Herb moved into the town of Graceville where he resided until the age of 96. He then he moved to Grace Home.

Herb was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Graceville. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served as Legion Post Commander for five years in Dumont, MN. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Herb loved to “pull people’s legs” and was known to be a bit of a prankster.
