Harvey Kunkel

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Beardsley. Father David L. Breu will officiate and burial at a later date will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday.

Music will be provided by Carmen Hills, organist; Sue Sykora and Stacy Borgheiinck, vocalists; Cindy Smart, flutist.

Casket bearers will be: Stephen Kunkel, Allen Schumacher, David Winans, Scott Renfrew, Nathan French, Paul Kunkel, Josh Hanson, Andrew Kunkel, Daniel Kunkel, Matthew Winans, Adam O'Neill, and Benjamin O'Neill. The lector will be Harvey's son, Stephen Kunkel.

Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post # 302, Beardsley, MN.

Harvey Anthony Kunkel was born October 17, 1927, in Watertown, MN. He was the son of Philip Anthony and Irene Bertha (Matter) Kunkel. He grew up in the Delano, MN area. He served in the United States Army and was a Jump Master for the paratroopers. He was honorably discharged and returned to college at the University of North Dakota, and received a Master's Degree. Harvey was united in marriage with Mona Haupt on May 9, 1954. They moved to Beardsley, MN and Harvey began his career in education in 1956. Harvey was a Teacher, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent for many years at the Beardsley High School, finishing his last years at the Browns Valley High School. Throughout his career, Harvey was dedicated to helping and guiding students. He influenced many young lives in a positive manner and was a respected leader in the school and community. In his spare time, Harvey enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and guitar playing. He had a passion for visiting with people and was well known for his 'witty' comments. He adored his family and treasured the times he spent with them. Harvey's spirited personality will be sorely missed and his family will hold dear the memory of his kind heart.

Harvey died April 2, 2014, at the age of 86 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mona of Ortonville, MN; four children: Debbie (Allen) Schumacher of St. Cloud, MN; Stephen A. Kunkel of Sauk Rapids, MN; Teresa (David) Winans of Fergus Falls, MN; Carolyn Haney (Scott Renfrew) of Parker, CO; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert D. (Jan) Kunkel of Bloomington, MN; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Philip; one daughter-in-law, Nicole Kunkel; one grandson, Michael Winans; and one great-grandson, Jack Hanson.
