Galian Thomas Schlimme, son of Hugo and Celia (Engelking) Schlimme, was born on May 8, 1928, in Prior Township, rural Clinton, Minnesota, where he grew up and lived most of his days. Tom was baptized on July 7, 1929, by Pastor Imanuel Frey and confirmed on March 24, 1957, by Reverend Mutterer, both at the rural Bethany Lutheran Church. He attended country schools through the eighth grade. Tom farmed with his brother Donald until he was called into the U. S. Army in January of 1953. He served until 1955 at which time he was honorably discharged.
On October 15, 1955, Tom and Verna Kohl were united in marriage. They were blessed with six children – Charles, Jacqueline, Brenda, Ronald, Gary, and Carol Sue. After his family was grown, Tom rented out his farm land and began working at the Clinton Good Samaritan Center as the maintenance man, a job he held from 1984 – 1998.
Upon retirement Tom spent his time each day playing cards with the guys, drinking coffee and visiting. Always a sports fan, Tom played some baseball and then joined the Fast Pitch Softball team of Big Stone City, SD as a catcher for David Torgerson. Tom was very proud to be voted into the Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in the 1990s.
Tom loved spending time with his family, attending family gatherings, and playing with the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was proud of the popcorn balls and many batches of taffy he made at Halloween and Christmas. In 2006 his work was done – in August of that year he suffered a severe stroke which left him paralyzed on his left side. In his remaining years he made his home at Grace Home. On January 3, 2014, Tom passed away at Essentia Health, Graceville, MN surrounded by his loving family.
Left with his loving memory are his wife Verna of Clinton, MN; sons: Chuck (Brigid) of St. Joseph, MO; Ron (Gail) of Clinton, MN; and Gary (Barb) of St. Michael, MN; daughters: Jackie (Dave) Hauschild of Clinton, MN; Brenda (Al) McAlister of Clinton, MN; and Carol (Terry) Maus of Clinton, MN; 15 grandchildren; three and soon to be four great-grandchildren; sisters: Dorothy Sales of Hauser Lake, ID; and Merla "Teen" Schlimme of Clinton, MN; sisters-in-law: Karen Hagen of Clinton, MN; and Zelda Kohl of Clinton, MN; brother-in-law David (Mona) Kohl of Sartell, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
