Galen Gottschalk

Galen Gottschalk, age 85, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Fairway View Neighborhoods.

In respecting Galen’s wishes, cremation will take place, and a private family ceremony will be held at a later date to honor his life and legacy.

Galen Keith Gottschalk was born in McPherson, KS, on December 5, 1940, to Freddie and Elvira (Gillberg) Gottschalk. He was raised in Lindsborg, KS, and graduated from Lindsborg High School.

In 1958, Galen enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1962. His time in the Navy took him to notable places, including San Diego, CA, Hawaii, and Japan.

After his military service, Galen dedicated himself to the automotive industry as an autobody mechanic and restoration specialist, owning and operating his own successful business for over 30 years. His passion for cars and attention to detail brought new life to many beloved classics, a testament to his love for working with his hands.

Galen’s journey through life took him across various states in the Midwest, including Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Among these, Deadwood, SD, held a special place in his heart, as he had a great interest in its history and beauty.

As a quiet family man, Galen enjoyed time to himself watching classic Westerns and David from “Lottery Dream Homes”. Music was a beloved part of his life, especially the lively rhythms of Rockabilly, and he loved to dance until his body began to falter.

Surviving Galen are his daughter, Gayla Athey, of Big Stone City, SD; son, Terry Gottschalk of Camarillo, CA; three grandchildren: Ashley (Dustin) Hanson, Brittni (Jon) Hintz, and Nick Athey; and eight great-grandchildren: Jaden, Jenna, Martino, Mia, Makiyah, Mason, Marcus, and Harlow.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Freddie and Elvira; sister, L. Yvonne Gottschalk; and son-in-law, Kelly Athey.
