Eleanor Frieda Zach was born on her family farm on November 25, 1928 in White Rock Township, Roberts County, South Dakota to Helmuth Paul and Elizabeth Agnes (Brockhaus) Thomas. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Rosholt High School.

On September 10, 1947 Eleanor was united in marriage with Frederick (Fritz) John Zach at St. John the Baptist Church in Rosholt, South Dakota. To this union fourteen children were born. Their early married years were spent near Humphrey, Nebraska. In 1954 the family moved to Graceville, Minnesota, where they settled on their farm. Fritz died on July 29, 1989. Eleanor moved into town two years later. Eleanor was employed at Grace Home as the housekeeping supervisor from 1982 – 1994.

Eleanor had artistic gifts. Her children bought her a kiln and she enjoyed ceramics. She also took painting classes in Wahpeton and repainted all the stations of the cross, the baptismal font, the statue of Mother Mary, and the nativity set at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Eleanor served as a Eucharistic Minister. She volunteered to clean the Church and Parish Center for many years. Eleanor received the Bishop's Medal for Service for her many contributions to the Church. She was a wonderful baker and would bake pies every Sunday morning before the family left for church! She enjoyed cooking and gardening. Most important to Eleanor was the time she spent with her family.
