Dorothy Verneal Schuler was born on November 16, 1930, in Ortonville, MN, to Erwin and Emma (Werner) Hecht. She was baptized on November 30, 1930, and later confirmed on November 12, 1944, at Christ Lutheran Church near Corona, SD. Dorothy attended Garfield #3 Country School, located a mile and a half from her home, and later continued her education at Wilmot High School.
After completing her schooling, she married Devlin Schuler Sr. on July 25, 1948, at Christ Lutheran Church. The couple purchased the Miller farm, where they made their home and raised their five children: Suzanne, Darwin, Paula, Delvin Jr., and Bradford. Life on the farm included raising chickens, ducks, and geese. Dorothy was a devoted homemaker, caring for her children, tending a large garden, canning, and managing all the responsibilities of rural farm life.
In 1984, Dorothy worked outside the home at St. William’s Care Center in Milbank, SD, where she enjoyed her position in the Beauty Shop. She then returned full time to her role as homemaker. She and Delvin Sr. were active members of the Wilmot Snowmobile Club and the local bowling league. Dorothy belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona and participated in the Wilmot Ladies Aide. She taught Sunday School and was involved in Band Mothers, helping repair uniforms and organize fundraisers, roles she fulfilled with enthusiasm and pride.
Dorothy and Delvin Sr. loved traveling together and visited many destinations across the United States. They especially enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s events, roller skating, bowling, and socializing at local dance halls with friends. Dorothy found joy in crocheting, sewing, baking, cooking, and hosting holiday gatherings at the farm, which was deeply meaningful to her. She also loved watching NASCAR and wrestling.
She is survived by her children: Suzanne “Suzie” (Dennis) Nordquist of Milbank, SD; Darwin (Holly) Schuler of Watertown, SD; Paula (Randall “Bronson”) Janssen of Sioux Falls, SD; Delvin Jr. “Fuzzy” (Sandy) Schuler of Corona, SD; and Bradford “Brad” (Kathy) Schuler of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren: Nicole (Rick) VanHoorn, Amber Schuler, Dustin Schuler, April Block, Celesta (Tyler) Frericks, Kayla (Nathan) Strege, Kendra (Laramie) Peiker, Karissa (Troy) Greiner, Kirsten (Kelsey) Schyrrell, Myranda (Austyn Burfeind, fiancé) Schuler, and Jaylyn Schuler; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carolyn Deslauriers of Watertown, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents: Erwin and Emma; husband, Delvin Schuler Sr.; and two brothers: Robert Hecht and Harley Hecht.
