Dorothy Bergstrom

August 4, 1904 — October 9, 2005

Dorothy was born on August 4, 1904, in Milbank, SD, the daughter of John E. and Minnie E. (Keller) Black. When she was a young girl, she moved with her family to Big Stone City, SD. Dorothy graduated from South Dakota State College in 1927. She taught English in high schools in South Dakota, Kansas, and Michigan. Dorothy taught at Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois, where she met her husband Carl. She retired from teaching in 1952.
She had many interests. Dorothy and Carl worked for several years teaching English via the Literacy Volunteers of America program. They worked with several Korean families teaching them English and exchanging customs. In addition to traveling abroad, her other interests included Bible study, symphony concerts/classical music, PEO, AAUW, reading, and cooking. Dorothy was a member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Survivors include two stepsons, Robert Bergstrom and wife Virginia, Park Ridge, IL; Donald Bergstrom and wife Margery, Downers Grove, IL; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two nephews, Donald Black and wife, Ila, Roseville, MN, and Jerry Black and wife Vicki, Gonzales, TX; eight grand nieces and nephews, and twenty-one great grand nieces and nephews.
Her parents, husband Carl, one sister, Doris L. Black; one brother, Robert Black, one sister-in-law, Mary Black, and one niece, Marilyn Black, preceded Dorothy in death.
