During her sophomore year of high school her family moved to Beardsley, MN. Darlene graduated from Beardsley High School, after which she moved to Fargo, ND, and began working at Woolworth's.

On March 18, 1961, Darlene was joined in marriage to Lee Schroeder in Beardsley. To this union three children were born. Darlene was employed at Big Stone Canning Factory, Electric Maid Bakery, The Grocery Basket in Big Stone City, as a cook at the Big Stone City School, and was currently working at McDaddy's in Big Stone City.

Darlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, Chautauqua Concerts, Twins baseball, and flowers. She cherished sharing a cup of coffee with friends and Girl's Night Out.
