Funeral service for Darlene Arloa Mohnsen, age 84, of Big Stone City, S.D, will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Ortonville, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. John Ragan will officiate.
Darlene Mohnsen, the daughter of Lloyd and Pearl (Arnold) Ellis was born on October 12, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa. Darlene attended country school and walked, actually walked, the 2 ½ miles to school! She graduated from High School in Clarkson, Nebraska and also completed two years at Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska.
On June 19, 1947, Darlene was united in marriage to Oliver Mohnsen. To this union two children were born. Their first home was in Lincoln, NE, where she worked at the Elgin Watch Company for two years. When they began their family, they relocated to Milbank, South Dakota. While living in Milbank, Darlene worked at Ben Franklin, Flanery's Meat Processing plant, and St. William's Home as a CNA up until 1980, when she and Oliver moved to Watertown, South Dakota. She worked at the Jenkins Home while living there. They moved to Rogers, Arkansas, where Darlene was employed by three different nursing homes. She retired when they moved back to Big Stone City, S.D. in 1989.
Darlene was a Boy Scout leader and Brownie Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, a 4H leader, and the County Extension chairperson.
Darlene loved her hobbies - crafting, quilting, wood chipping, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. In her later years it was flower gardens and bird watching. She also enjoyed a game or two of cards - any cards, any puzzles, any games!
Darlene died Thursday, November 17, 2011, at Northridge Residence, Ortonville, Minnesota, having reached the age of 84 years.
Left to her loving memory is her daughter: Candy Mohnsen; grandson: Shawn Folk; granddaughter and grandson: Carlos and Amber Huebner; great-grandchildren: Kierstin, Alex, McKenzie, Mariah and Christen Huebner.
Darlene is preceded in death by her parents: Lloyd and Pearl Ellis; her husband: Oliver A. Mohnsen; her son: David L. Mohnsen; and 2 brothers: Edwin and wife Maryann Ellis and Daryl Ellis.
