Bernard Oswood

Memorial services for Bernie Oswood are 2 P.M. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. David Tonn will officiate with Amy Adelman and Jim Foster providing music. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery with Military Honors.

Bernard Albin Oswood was born on October 20, 1932 to Clifford Bernard and Mary Catherine (Hausauer) Oswood in Ortonville. He was the youngest of seven children. Bernie entered the U. S. Navy in March of 1952 and early in his career received his GED. Bernie was a ship fitter and he was honorably discharged in October of 1971, achieving the rank of Senior Chief E8.

While stationed in New Hampshire Bernie met Ursel (Heidi) Vollmer and they were married in March of 1968. They had no children.

Upon retiring from the Navy, Bernie worked in maintenance at the College of Lake County in northeastern Illinois. He was also a carpenter in Nevis, Minnesota. Bernie and Heidi moved to Ortonville in 2000. Heidi died in 2004.

Bernie enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, reading and watching sports and news on TV. He had a great sense of humor. Bernie especially loved his nieces and nephews and claimed them as 'my kids'!

Bernie died on July 26, 2013 at the Ortonville Hospital, having reached the age of 80.

Bernie is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Heidi; and his siblings: Annetta, Margaret, Betty, Orville, Donald, and Shirley.
