Aloma Laverne McGaa was born on March 19, 1943, to parents Gerald Eugene and Rose Mable (Kahawai) Lynch in Wahiawa, Oahu, HI. She was baptized in Rapid City, SD. Aloma lived in Hawaii until the age of 11, when her family moved to Denver, CO. After many years of study, she received her Master of Arts degree in Women's Studies from the University of South Dakota. This achievement was an inspiration to many people.

On June 26, 1963, Aloma was united in marriage to Gene L. McGaa at St. John the Evangelist Church in Rapid City, SD. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Christopher and Rose. Aloma and Gene made their home in a variety of communities. Important to them were their homes in Denver, Gillette, Sturgis, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Grenville, and Browns Valley. Aloma was the Archivist at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Community College from 1997 to 2010. She was also a professor in the History department.

Aloma was a perpetual student and was passionate about women's issues, helping lead the way for those coming after her. She loved to read. In her younger years, she and Gene spent many hours on motorcycles! Aloma's true passion was her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She lovingly placed other's needs ahead of her own, whether it was family, friends, or students.

Aloma passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at her home. She had lived to reach the age of 68 years.

Left with Aloma's loving memory are her husband, Gene, and her children: Chris (Amy) McGaa of Sioux Falls, SD; and Rose McGaa of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren: Caitlin Rose Kennedy and Aloma Lynn McGaa; brother Leonard Lynch of Denver, CO; sisters: Geraldine (Dick) Harrison of Hilo, HI and Leilani (Jeff Dickinson) Lynch of Denver, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

Aloma is preceded in death by her parents.
