Lois grew up on a farm north of Johnson, Minnesota and graduated from Graceville High School in 1950. She tied as Valedictorian but lost on a draw. Lois enjoyed working for the Graceville Phone Company before she was married.

Lois was united in marriage with Leo Taffe on October 27, 1956, at St. Barnabus Catholic Church in Barry, Minnesota. They were blessed with five children.
