David Liang Tie Oey, M.D., 85, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Wilmot Lutheran Church.  Rev. Sheila Pohl will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, beginning at noon.

Casket bearers will be: Alexander Oey, Graham Oey, Ashley Trudeau, Codie Schmeichel, Derek Coover, and Carter Locy.  Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren: Haley Nordmeyer, Xander Oey, Braylon Oey, Hadley Devine, Mack Trudeau, Taye Trudeau, Emilyn Locy, Avy Oey, Lucy Oey, and Turner O'Bryan.

Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, the fourth of 10 children, he spent time in Australia, Germany and Canada before settling in Sisseton, South Dakota, where he met his wife Lori, and practiced medicine for 42 years. David, who practiced until 2016, loved his patients, planting trees, and developing his own recipes. Above all, David loved his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Growing up, David’s family designed and manufactured batik, a cloth that is a staple in many Indonesian traditions. He attended a Chinese school with English as a second language and also spoke Indonesian, which was the only language spoken at home. After finishing school in Indonesia, he went to Australia for an additional two years before receiving a matriculation test and acceptance to the University of Engineering and Medicine.

He chose the University of Munich, West Germany, to enroll in the medical field because of the impression left by his family’s pediatrician, who saved David’s one-year-old sister when she was seriously ill.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude with his Medical Degree, David spent time in Canada practicing medicine. In 1973, members of the Ipswich Hospital board contacted David about a position, but it was Sisseton where he would make his home  for many years.

David was a quiet man who’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, watching both his children and grandchildren grow. For him, there was nothing better than the knowledge that his family was near him. He was drawn to nature, spending countless hours enjoying the outdoors at his home and cabin. A shady spot under a tree was one of his favorite locations to watch his kids enjoy time in the lake.

David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lori; his children: Alexander (Tracy) Oey of Marshall, Minnesota;  Theresa (Ashley) Oey-Trudeau of Brookings; Rachel (Codie) Schmeichel of Sioux Falls; Graham (Christina) Oey of Pierre; and Brenna O’Bryan (Derek Coover) of Sioux Falls; and grandchildren: Haley, Xander, Braylon, Hadley, Mack, Taye, Carter, Emilyn, Avy, Lucy and Turner. He is also survived by three brothers: Sein, Hein, Hoat; and two sisters: Hetty and Ertien; parents-in-law, Dale and Anita Remund of Brookings; and his long-time nurse, Carol Currence.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and son-in-law, Israel O’Bryan.
