Obituary

*********FUNERAL SERVICES FOR BETTY NORDQUIST HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL TUESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2020, AT 1 P.M.************

Betty L. Nordquist, age 95 of Milbank passed away on January 11, 2020, at Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday. Reverend Kent Groethe will officiate, and burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery at a later date.

Betty Lee (Lowe) Nordquist was born on June 18, 1924, at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Milbank, SD, to Leo and Ruby (Cass) Lowe. She grew up on a farm near Summit, SD. Betty attended country school near Summit until eighth grade and graduated from Milbank High School.

While attending high school, Betty worked at Schad’s Bakery. She met her future husband, Amer, while they were in school. Amer left for military service and the two were married when he was home on military leave. The couple moved to Kansas, where Amer was stationed. Betty moved back to the Twin Brooks area to stay with her mother while Amer served overseas.

Betty and Amer were blessed with two children: Janet and Dennis. After Amer was discharged from the U.S. Army, the family moved to Milbank where they lived until Amer’s passing in 1999. Betty later moved to Watertown, SD, in 2015 and recently moved back to Milbank.

Along with raising her two children, Betty worked as a store clerk at the National-T Grocery Store and at Skel Gas as a bookkeeper. She owned and operated an antique shop in her home, and she and Amer attended and set up at many antique shows around the area. After Amer died, she then retired and found a new passion - shopping at Herberger’s.  She and her daughter-in-law were known as “the Herberger’s ladies” by many family members.

Betty enjoyed playing cards with her friends, square dancing, antiquing, and attending estate sales to find treasures to sell or to keep for herself if she really liked them. She also had an endless love for Werther’s Original Caramel Hard Candies.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Janet Morris of Watertown, SD; and Dennis (Suzanne) Nordquist of Milbank, SD; three grandchildren: Stacy (Greg) Christofferson, Kevin (Dawn) Morris, and Nicole (Rick) Van Hoorn; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Amer; her parents; one great-great-grandson; three brothers; and two sisters.

Memorials are preferred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
