Walburga Hagen

February 19, 1914 — June 16, 2007

Walburga "Burgie" Elizabeth Ecker was born on February 9, 1914 in Madison, MN to Nick and Philomina (Trapp) Ecker. The Ecker house was always bustling with activity since Burgie had eleven siblings growing up. Growing up during the Great Depression had a significant impact on developing Burgie's thrifty way later in life. She attended school through the eighth grade in Madison, MN. In her early twenties, she added to her education by attending the Ag School in Morris for two years. On February 14, 1938 Burgie was united in marriage to Donald Hagen in Graceville, MN. To this union were born five children; Kenneth, Gary, David, Mary, and Leroy. Burgie and Donald celebrated forty-five years together prior to his passing on January 18, 1984.

Burgie was a devoted mother and farm wife throughout her life. She raised chickens and ducks and took great care of her children. Burgie was a wonderful cook and baker, baking homemade bread, pies and cake on a nearly daily basis. She enjoyed going to her mother?s home in Madison for Christmas and her sister-in-law, Irma's, cottage for the fourth of July for a day of swimming and family time. Burgie always had an easy going way about her. In her free time she enjoyed dancing with Donald, playing cards, gardening and crocheting. After Donald's passing she built a home in Graceville large enough for the entire family to come and visit and was very proud of her home. Throughout her life she was a woman who was strong in her faith, rarely missing Sunday mass and was an active member in the Ladies Circle.

Burgie passed away Friday, June 15, 2007 at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents, Nick and Philomina (Trapp) Ecker; five brothers, Joe, Henry, Leo, William and Aloys; and three sisters, Hellen, Regina and Rose.

Burgie is survived by four sons, Kenneth (Christine) Hagen of Westminster, CO, Gary Hagen of Bovey, MN, David Hagen of Deerfield Beach, FL, and Leroy (Lynn) Hagen of Hibbing, MN; and one daughter, Mary Juneau of Coon Rapids, MN. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Allen Hagen, Mike Hagen, Greg Hagen, John Hagen, Chris Hagen, Adam Hartung, Michelle Roybal, Renee Castillo, and Erin Cary; fifteen great-grandchildren, Ashley, Lauren, Craig, Travis, Sam, Baylor, Molly, Aidan, Ashley, Finley, Emma, Ethan, Madison, Mckenzie, and Mason; three sisters, Viola Hasner of Sioux Falls, SD, Rita Mosher of Grand Junction, CO, and Dula Chapel of Grand Junction, CO; in addition to many more nieces and nephews.
