Vern was born on March 28, 1919 at Graceville, MN to William and Gertrude (Gravatt) Gary. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in 1949. Vern attended country school and the Barry school for his elementary education and graduated from Graceville High School in 1938.



On July 22, 1945, Vern was united in marriage to Arline Palmer. They were blessed with ten children.



Vern farmed with his father and brother following graduation. After his family was grown he also drove truck. Following retirement Vern worked as a hired hand for a farmer.



Vern served on the Siloah Church Council, Barry Farmers Elevator Board of Directors, and also on the Graceville School Board for many years.



Vern spent his whole life in the Barry-Graceville area. Each new grandchild or great grandchild was a special joy. He enjoyed his family and friends. Vern passed away on August 24, 2004 doing one of the things he loved to do...playing cards with his friends.



Survivors include his wife, Arline of Graceville, MN; ten children, Doug (Kathy) Gary of Castlewood, SD, Candace (Byron) Raynie of San Antonio, TX, Janet (Jerry) Leifgren of Prior Lake, MN, Cindy (Paul) Glorvigen of Worthington, MN, Daryl (Ginger) Gary of Palm Harbor, FL, Dale (Audrey) Gary of Graceville, MN, Joleen (Paul) Backlund of Moorhead, MN, Dan (Carla) Gary of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Neal) Buller of Graceville, MN, and Dean (Dana) Gary of Moorhead, MN; twenty-four grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; and two sister-in-laws, Pearline Rakow of Graceville, MN, and LaVonne Stone of Brandon, SD.



Vern was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertrude (Gravatt) Gary; one brother, Willard; two sisters, Marjorie and Helen; one sister-in-law, Evelyn; two brothers-in-law, Eldon and Fred; and one nephew, Dennis.
