Raymond Gettman

June 30, 1923 — November 26, 2007

Raymond E. Gettman was born June 30, 1923, to parents Edward and Rose (Moran) Gettman, in Graceville, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in Graceville at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Ray attended grade school in Graceville, and graduated from High School in Browns Valley, MN.

Ray married Patricia (Allen) in 1948 and together, they had three children; Carol (Bill) Barbknecht of Underwood, Kathy (David) Schwagel and Ron (Judy) Gettman. Ray later married Gretchen (Lindig) in 1972, and with that union, Gretchen brought to the family three more children; Karl (Patty) Wolk, Jackie (Leigh) Mellendorf, and Kurt (Tammi) Wolk.

Ray worked with his parents in the family grocery store, and eventually took over Gettman's Red Owl until

1979, when in 1980 he opened up Ray's Super Valu, putting in at times, 14 hour days and always available when someone needed something. Ray retired in 1990.

Ray loved family get togethers and he would invite everyone over, but would forget to tell Gretchen! His time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to him. He always had a story or a joke to tell, and Ray was always the first person to help others out when they needed it. He loved to bowl, hunt, golf and he was an excellent wood worker! Ray always encouraged his family, and one of the sayings was "When the going gets rough, the tough get going".

He was active in the Town and Country Club, the Graceville Gun Club and the Sportsman's Club. In 2004, he moved into the Browns Valley Health Center, in Browns Valley, MN.

Ray is survived by his wife, Gretchen, Browns Valley, MN; two daughters, Carol (Bill) Barbknecht, Underwood, MN, and Kathy (David) Schwagel, Browns Valley, MN; one son, Ron (Judy) Gettman, Browns Valley, MN; two step-sons, Karl (Patty) Wolk, Richland, WA, Kurt (Tammi) Wolk, Onalaska, WI; one step-daughter, Jackie (Leigh) Mellendorf, Brandt, SD; 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents.
