Myrtle Irene Hamberg was born October 21, 1907, to Arvid and Alvina (Larson) Johnson in Clinton. Myrtle was an infant on June 27, 1908 when the tornado tore through Clinton. The Arvid Johnson home was destroyed, however Alvina and Myrtle survived because they were next door visiting at the Brantner house which suffered minor damage. Arvid was drilling a well on a farm at the time and rushed back to Clinton to find his house gone, but thankfully his family was spared. Myrtle was baptized and confirmed in Elim Lutheran Church. Myrtle grew up helping her parents on the farm and she attended school in rural Big Stone County in School District 39. She later took a music course at St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1927.

On January 2, 1929, Myrtle and (John) Axel Hamberg were united in marriage. Myrtle was active in a number of church activities, including Church Choir, Sewing Guild, Ladies Aid, Sunday School, and Altar Guild.

Axel and Myrtle farmed in Big Stone County and operated a dairy for a number of years and distributed milk products in the Clinton area. Later they moved into Clinton while Axel continued to farm. Myrtle worked as a seamstress in her home and later worked in the Country Kitchen CafAAC.. They also opened their home by renting rooms to local schoolteachers including Ruth (Musil) Swezey and Julia (Edwards) Tonder. Ruth and Julia became part of Myrtle's family and continued to visit her until the time of her death. Myrtle lived in Clinton until 1984, when she moved to Ortonville to live with her sister, Evelyn Gjengdahl. In 1998, after Evelyn's death, Myrtle moved into the Clinton Care Center. She resided there until 2004, at which time she moved to the St. Anthony Care Center in Minneapolis to be closer to her nieces and nephews.

Myrtle passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the St Anthony Care Center in Minneapolis, MN, having reached the age of 99 years.
