Melvin Maatz

Melvin Martin Max Maatz was born on November 11, 1934 at home in Walter Township to parents Fred and Alma Maatz. He was baptized at and 14 years later, also confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walter Township, Bellingham, MN. After attending country school, Melvin graduated from Bellingham High School and became a farmer.
On August 7, 1959, Melvin was united in marriage to Carol Boldenow at Eidskog Lutheran Church in rural Ortonville, MN. To this union four children were born: Debra, David, Daniel and Daren. Through his life, family was very important to Melvin, as well as his faith and community. Melvin and Carol celebrated forty-seven loving years together prior to her passing in 2007, most of which was spent of their farm in rural Bellingham, MN.
In addition, Melvin was very involved in his community. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and held many positions in the church, as well as being a life-long tenor in the church choir. He also enjoyed fishing year-around, hunting, watching all levels of sporting events, playing Whist, Pinochle and board games, as well as visiting with family, neighbors and friends regularly. Both Melvin and Carol were active leaders in 4-H. They were also loyal supporters and avid fans of both Bellingham and Ortonville High School sporting events. Melvin also enjoyed vacations to various destinations, including a family camping trip out west, to the Black Hills, Hawaii and Branson, MO.
He will be missed for his gentle spirit, caring heart and sense of humor.
Melvin passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the Northridge Residence in Ortonville, MN. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol, his parents, Fred and Alma, step-mother, Myrtle, sister Norma and a brother who died at birth.
Melvin is survived by three sons, David (Amy) Maatz of Corcoran, MN, Daniel (Tina) Maatz of Lakeville, MN and Daren Maatz of Ortonville, MN; one daughter Debra (Tom) Olson of Prior Lake, MN; and six grandchildren, Samantha, Jack, Brandon, Logan, Abigail and Alexa. He is also survived by two brothers, Walter (Marion) Maatz of Bellingham, MN, Paul (Pamela) Maatz of Bemidji, MN and two sisters, Marilyn (Herb) Streich of Ortonville, MN and Ruth Maatz of Edina, MN and a large extended family and many dear friends and neighbors.
