Funeral services for Mrs. Mary "Eileen" Mead, age 78, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at the Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank. The Reverend Beth Conrad will officiate. Eileen died on Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health following a long and courageous battle with kidney failure and cancer. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests that memorials be directed to the American Heart Association, Dakota Affiliate, Inc., P.O. Box 1287, Jamestown, ND 58401. Family members are asked to meet in the church fireside room by 10:00 a.m. Tuesday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Monday from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Parkview United Methodist Women, Malcolm and Diana Dirksen, and Don and Shirley Parsons. Active pallbearers will be Craig Nehring, Bill Mohr, Delmar Schmidt, Paul Sinclair, Arlo Haase, and Steve Kjellsen. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Eileen was born on August 25, 1928, at Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Leland and Alice (Lane) Ingham. She graduated from Waverly High School in Waverly, Iowa in 1946. Eileen was united in marriage to Donald G. Mead on March 4, 1952, at Norfolk, Virginia. Following marriage, she supported Don through twenty years of military service which took them all across the United States. They lived in Custer, SD, from 1968 until 1977 when they moved to Milbank. She worked many jobs including as a waitress, institutional cook, school crossing guard, nurses' aide, Avon representative, various volunteer activities, and as a childcare worker. Eileen took special joy in caring for children, especially the Paul Sinclair, Rich Brubakken, and Allen Stewart children.
She was a member of the Parkview United Methodist Church, the UMW, and the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. Eileen loved camping, doing puzzle books, going to Bible study, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching the Minnesota Twins, going to UMW, and playing Skip-Bo.
Survivors include her husband Donald, Milbank; two sons, Ronald Mead and wife Penny, Milbank, and Barry Mead and wife, Doris, Santa Rita, Guam; three grandchildren, Wendy Nehring and husband Reverend Craig, Hawkins, WI; Derek Mead, serving in Iraq and wife Jolene, Germany; and Sheldon Mead and wife Tina, Belle Fourche, SD; three great grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Olmstead, Dallas, Texas; one brother, Robert Vincent Ingham and wife Martha, Sequim, WA; one sister-in-law, Leota Ingham, Marysville, WA; and best friend, Betty Gill, Milbank.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Brenda Lu Mead, one sister, Ethel Foutch, and two brothers, Merwyn and Willard Ingham.
