Marion Stanton

February 2, 1919 — June 8, 2008

Marion Louise Stanton was born on February 2, 1919 in Logan, Iowa to Michael and Clara (Baker) McKenney. When Marion was still a baby the family moved to Oneida, SD. At the age of 8 Marion moved with her family to Madison, MN, where she was raised and educated. Marion graduated from Madison High School in 1938. She then moved to St. Paul and worked for Dr. Emerson as a cook and maid for about a year. Marion moved to Minneapolis to attend Beauty School. She was united in marriage to Leonard Stanton on October 19, 1941. After Len's induction into the U.S. Army the couple moved to Springfield, MO until after the war. They lived for a short time in Canby then Clinton. In 1947 Marion and Len moved to Graceville and opened the Stanton Barber Shop and later added the Beauty Shop. They closed the business in 1958. Len passed away in 1961. Marion remained in Graceville and worked at the Graceville Drive-in, the Graceville Flower Shop, Larson Pharmacy and Liebe Drug. Marion retired in November of 2005.



Marion had many interests. She really enjoyed knitting, gardening, baking and cooking. Marion was an avid Twins fan. She rarely missed watching or listening to a game. Marion was active in the church and served as secretary for many years. She belonged to the Happy Homemakers, The Rebecca Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary. Marion also served on the board for the Hospital and Nursing Home and the Shamrock, Toqua and Hi-Lo apartment buildings in town. Above all Marion loved her family and friends.



Marion died on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at MeritCare in Fargo having lived to reach the age of 89 years.



Marion is survived by her daughters: Sharon (Bill) Wittorf of St. Louis Park, Deb (Paul) Thompson, of Hancock, and Penny Stanton of Morris; five grandchildren: Beth Hilbrand, Joel Leuthard, Hope Leuthard, Sarah Schmidt, Dylan Stanton - Ring; seven great-grandchildren: Devin, Mia and Brayden Buss, Nichelle, Nathan and Chelsea Hilbrand; Kyle and baby Schmidt; brother: Vance (Orpha) McKenney of Hopkins; sister: Opal (Carl) Zinter of Canby; many nieces and nephews. Marion was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Len; brothers: Theron and Harold; infant son: Miles Leonard; grandchildren: Sunshine and Isaac Leuthard.
