Margaret Matheson

February 3, 1922 — August 18, 2006

Margaret Marie Hauck was born on February 3, 1922, in Madison, MN, to parents Arthur and Hilder (Akerson) Hauck and was baptized in the First Congregational Church in Madison. She graduated from Madison High School in 1940, and spent her first year of college at Carleton College, Northfield, MN. In 1941, she transferred to Iowa State College (now ISU), Ames, IA, where she earned a BS degree in Dietetics and an MS degree in Nutrition.



On September 25, 1945, Margaret married Monte Matheson at the First Congregational Church in Madison, MN. Monte was on leave from the USAF so when he returned to active duty, Margaret returned to Boston, MN, to complete her dietetic internship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. When Monte was discharged from the USAF, the Matheson's moved to Minneapolis, where they lived for the next 30 years. Margaret was employed as a dietitian at Northwestern Hospital, the Minneapolis VA Hospital and St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. She also taught one semester at Macalester College in St Paul. During this time, Margaret served on several committees in the Twin Cities District Dietetic Association, was elected Secretary and later President of the Minnesota Dietetic Association. She also served two terms as a Minnesota Delegate to the American Dietetic Association. She received the Medallion Award from the Minnesota Dietetic Association in 1981 and the Medallion Award from the American Dietetic Association in 1986. She was a Life Member of the ADA.



In 1985, the Matheson's moved to Ortonville to spend their retirement years on the shores of Big Stone Lake. Margaret was active in her church and in the community. She serviced twice as Chairperson of the Women's Fellowship of her church and also served on the Finance Committee and Church Council. She was a member of the OAHS Auxiliary, Friends of the Library and Ortonville Study Club. She also served 9 years on the City Council.



Margaret passed away Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Ortonville Hospital in Ortonville, MN., reaching the age of 84 years. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Charles Hauck and sister, Nancy Hauck Maguire.



Margaret is survived by her husband, Monte of Ortonville, MN; daughter, Cheryl Reding and her husband Darnell Wallin of Hager City, WI; son Robert Matheson and his wife Nancy of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one sister, Janet Ring of LaCrosse, WI; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.



The family requests that donations be made in Margaret's memory to the Ortonville Health Systems and to the Congregational United Church of Christ in Ortonville, MN.
