Lorraine Burg

March 9, 1916 — September 23, 2010

Lorraine Elizabeth Burg was born on March 9, 1916 on her family farm in Becker Township, Roberts County, SD to parents Henry and Emma (Hedrick) Burg. She was baptized at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Browns Valley. She was raised on the farm and attended country school in Roberts County until the 8th grade. She went to Browns Valley High School where she graduated with the class of 1934.

After high school, Lorraine worked for the Bigelo family, and then later moved into Browns Valley with her parents. She began working as a bookkeeper at Interlake Coop. and Tri-County Coop. She worked as a check out teller at Paulson’s Grocery and then Maynard’s Grocery. Lorraine was very active with the church being involved with the Christian Mother’s and cooking meals for the priests.

Family was very important to Lorraine, who held the family together. Lorraine’s sisters remember her as a good person. She devoted her life to caring for Ma and Pa. Lorraine was also very involved with the helping to care for and raise her nieces and nephews who lovingly referred as “Auntie Raine”. Lorraine had a quick whit and was an avid card player. She loved her cards; they were serious business to her! She also enjoyed traveling to points of interest in California, Nevada, North and South Dakota and Minnesota.

Lorraine lived in her home, with her parents, in Browns Valley until October of 1998. She then moved into the Browns Valley Health Center and resided there until 2000. From 2000 to the present she lived at the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD. There she became well-known and loved for her participation during activities, including daily mass and game playing. Lorraine enjoyed winning and was always entertaining the staff and fellow residence with her frequent quotes, such as “Good- Better- Best … Never let it rest until the good is better and the better is best!” and “My ma always said- if ya don’t die young – ya gotta get old.”

Lorraine died on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD; she had lived to reach the age of 94 years.

Lorraine is survived by her sisters: Isabelle Cox of Sacramento, CA and Dolores Currence of Sisseton, SD; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother Kenneth Burg; and two sisters Lucille Beier and Imogene Werth.
