Leona Semrau

April 6, 1915 — November 3, 2004

Leona Manda Bertha Semrau was born on April 15th, 1915, at the family farmstead east of Ortonville to parents Wilhelm and Minna (Minnie Strube) Hamann.

She was the youngest member of a family of eleven children.

Leona began her walk with Jesus through baptism on May 9th, 1915 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Odessa by Rev. Max Milinant. On April 1st, 1938 she was confirmed by Rev. Ihno Jannsen and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Odessa. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Ortonville when God called her home.

Leona grew up on the family farm east of Ortonville. She attended German school and Dist. 36. She worked on the family farm. In May 1944, Leona, along with her mother and sister Hattie, moved to Ortonville. Leona worked as a waitress and in retail.

On May 25th, 1949 she was united in marriage to Albert Semrau and to this union two children were born, Roger Allen and Karen Ann.

Leona was not only a homemaker but a farmer who milked cows, raised chickens, bailed hay and was an excellent operator of the tractor as she plowed and tilled the land.

Leona worked for Prairie Five and Big Stone Co. Action Center and retired in 1997.

Leona was blessed to be part of a large loving family who helped and took care of each other. Leona kept busy taking care of her grandchildren and children. Helping in any way she could, by serving and preparing meals for Doug, Roger, and Nathan and by making desserts and treats for Nicole and Karen.

God called Leona home to be with him on Wednesday, November 3rd. She passed away at the Wheaton Hospital.

Leona reached the age of 89 years 6 months and 28 days when God called her home - what a glorious day from Mom.

Leona is survived by her son Roger, daughter Karen and son in her heart Douglas Nelson. Grandson Nathan and Granddaughter Nicole. Brother in law Clifford (Burness) Semrau of Sioux Falls, and sisters in law Gustie Whiting of Martinez Calif., and Evelyn Zempel of Morris. As well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert (in 1992), her parents, sisters; Frances, Mary, Martha, Hattie and brothers; August, Bill, Fred, Richard, Otto, and Frank.
