Korty Lange

May 8, 1910 — September 3, 2007

Korty Aasta Lange was born on May 8, 1910 in Ortonville, MN to parents Jentoft Blum and Aasta Karoline (Olsen) Johnson. She grew up as the third of thirteen children and was a first generation American born to Norwegian parents. Her parents believed that their children should embrace their new country and had their children speak only English at home. Korty attended school through the eighth grade. Korty met Oscar Lange at one of the local dances and the two were married on April 7, 1929 on her parents farm. The two loved to dance together, often traveling to North Dakota to see a young Lawrence Welk perform. To this union were born six children: Jean, Gordon, Marilyn, Darrell, Yvonne, and David. Korty and Oscar celebrated over fifty years together prior to his passing.

In addition to raising her children, Korty worked throughout her life. For many years she worked as a pastry cook at many restaurants, including the Delmonico CafAAC. in Morris and several places in Chokio. At the age of sixty-one, Korty decided to become a nurse and went through training to become a CNA, working at the Holy Trinity Hospital for a while before leaving to take care of her mother for many years. Aside from her very strong work ethic, Korty was a woman whose faith was very important to her. She never missed church services or sending her children to Sunday School.

In her free time, Korty enjoyed reading everything book she could find, especially biographies. She kept her mind sharp by memorizing all of the states and their capitals, and then all of the presidents along with their wives and children. She also enjoyed playing the harmonica and embroidering, a skill that she past on to her daughters.

Korty shared her wonderful baking and pastry skills with her family whenever she could. She would make pies with various fillings and caramel rolls along with traditional Norwegian delicacies, such as krumkake and lefse. Korty delighted in hosting family gatherings at her home and enjoyed preparing over two hundred chocolate popcorn balls at Christmas time. She loved and treasured all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren equally and for their own particular reason and she took care to never show favoritism.

Korty passed away on Monday, September 3, 2007 at the Grace Home where she had lived for over twenty-five years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jentoft and Aasta (Olsen) Johnson; husband, Oscar; daughter, Jean Asmus; son-in-law, Marvin "Duke" Asmus; grandson, Terry Sullivan; and great-grandson, Nicholas Rizner. She is also preceded in death by six brothers, William, Roald, Myron, Floyd, Arnold, and Roy Johnson; and one sister, Orla Lange.

Korty is survived three sons, Gordon (Gilda), Darrell (Judith), David (Deb); two daughters, Marilyn (LeRoy) Read and Yvonne (Virgil) Sullivan; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Wayne, Clarence, and Edgar Johnson; two sisters, Opal Knudson and Gwen Rosedahl; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by all those who had the pleasure to know her.
