John Martin

April 16, 1924 — February 4, 2010

John Francis Martin was born on April 16, 1924 to Walter and Angeline (Chaloupka) Martin in Ortonville, MN. John was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ortonville. He attended school in Ortonville and graduated from Ortonville High School.

After graduation, John moved to Minneapolis where he attended Minnesota Business College where he earned his degree in accounting. While in college, he met Lillian Prochazka and on June 3, 1947, they were married. To this union, they had two children: Diane in 1956 and David in 1958.

On January 19, 1943, John entered into the Naval Service. He was stationed in Idaho. John was honorably discharged early, on October 19, 1943, in Farragut, Idaho, due to Rheumatic Fever.

John and Lillian lived in Minneapolis until their home was built in St. Louis Park, MN. John worked for Armour Food Service in Downtown Minneapolis as an accountant, working there for more than 25 years until his retirement. John and Lillian continued to live at their home until 2003 when Lillian passed away. After calling this home for 55 years, John moved into what is now Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD. After the completion of Fairway View in Ortonville, John moved there, until his death.

John was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church in St. Louis Park, MN, where he served as an usher, until he moved back into this area. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in St. Louis Park. He enjoyed gardening and was always known for his infectious smile and spontaneous sense of humor.

John passed away on February 4, 2010 at the Ortonville Area Health Services in Ortonville, MN at the age of 85.

John is survived by his daughter Diane (Kevin) Dunder of Portland, OR; son David Martin of Everett, WA; grandchildren: Christopher Dunder of Santa Clara, CA, Eric Dunder of Portland, OR, Larissa Martin of Everett, WA, Chantelle Martin of Mill Creek, WA, Janalyn Martin of Mill Creek, WA; and two sisters: Elaine Stolpman of Cold Spring, MN and Joanne (Norbert) Berndt of Big Stone City, SD.

John is preceded in death by his parents; wife Lillian; brothers: Eugene, Donald, and Walter; sisters: Doris, Florence, and Mavis.
