Services for John Bernard Folkens, age 101, who died at his home in Clinton, Minnesota on Saturday, August 10, 2013, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pastor Bev McNeill will officiate and organist will be Bonnie Stotesbery. Honorary Urn Bearers will be John's Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, the Community Card Club members, and all that he called "Friend". Burial is in the Clinton City Cemetery.
John Bernard Folkens was born March 10, 1912, to Martin and Katherine (Laman) Folkens in Otrey Township, Big Stone County, Minnesota. He was baptized July 2, 1913 at the Methodist Church in Clinton, Minnesota. He attended District #21 and District #10 schools through the 8th grade.
John and Emma (Weinman) were united in marriage on May 14, 1939, in Malta Township. To this union four daughters and one son were born. They made their home on a farm east of Clinton. A lifelong farmer, John also did custom corn shelling and combining.
John was active in the farming community, serving on the Clinton Elevator board for 35 years, a member of the ASC Committee and the Board of Adjustments. He served on the Creamery board, the FHA board, and was a lifelong Farmers Union Member. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he also served on the Church Council.
In the Clinton community John belonged to the Community Card Club and was active in restoring the Old Depot. He was passionate about promoting and helping out Clinton businesses. John loved to visit with people and help everyone in need. He was a Huge" Minnesota Twins" and "Clinton Cards" baseball Fan.
John died the way he wanted to - in his own home with his wife and two daughters nearby.
Memorials are preferred to Clinton First Responders and Community Card Club.
He is survived by his wife, Emma, of Clinton, MN; daughters: Sandra (Dennis) Toner of Tucson AZ; Carol (Charles) Lewis of Clinton, MN; Cheryl Bachmeier of Naples FL; and Kathleen Gillespie of Clinton, MN; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Floyd (Leone) Folkens of St. Cloud, MN; sister-in-law, Pearl Reitz of Dow City, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Kate; son, Ronald Folkens; and brothers: Earl, Edwin, Roy, and Alan Folkens.
