Jack McClelland

Jack McClelland, age 85, of Minnehaha Cove, Big Stone Lake, rural Wilmot, SD, died on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at the Wilmot Care Center in Wilmot, SD.

It was Mr. McClelland's wish that he be cremated. There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held in Pierre, SD, and in Council Bluffs, IA, at a later time.

Jack Raymond McClelland was born on December 14, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Ray L. "Muggs" and Esther (Hansen) McClelland. He grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He was a WWII Veteran having served his country in the U.S. Navy from April 21, 1943, until his honorable discharge on January 14, 1946. Jack attended electrical school in the Navy. He was an Aviation Electrician's Mate, Second Class. He received the American Area Victory Medal.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as an electrician in the railroad yards for forty years.

Jack married Katherine Steele on December 14, 1957, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Upon retirement, the couple moved to their home on Big Stone Lake where he continued the life he loveda�"hunting and fishing.

He spent his life outdoors. Jack was a staunch supporter of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and believed in everyone's right to bear arms. He was a firm believer in education and hard work. He was a licensed tree surgeon. He also enjoyed fishing in walleye tournaments and reading classic literature and poetry.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine, Minnehaha Cove, Big Stone Lake; three sons: Jack McClelland, Pierre, SD; Mike McClelland and wife Darcy, Ft. Pierre, SD; and Thomas McClelland, Timber Lake, SD; two daughters: Leslee McClelland, Wilmot, SD, and Kimberly McClelland-Knippen and husband Al, Big Stone City, SD; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis "Toots" McClelland-Mata.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Kathryn; one son, Randy Williams; and one grandson, Rex David McClelland.
