Funeral services for Jack Ferber, age 102, of Milbank, and formerly of rural Twin Brooks, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona, SD. The Reverend Glenn Schultz will officiate. The organist will be Corrine D. Hanson and the soloist will be Larry Tietjen. Mr. Ferber died on Saturday, August 7th, at the Golden Living Center in Milbank.
Family members are asked to meet in the church annex by 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and will resume in the church Wednesday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Michael Ferber, Michael Remund, Simon Thielen, Von McCrea, Jason Grabow, and Perry Dockter. Burial will be in the Kilborn Lutheran Cemetery near Corona, SD
Jack was born on the family farm in Kilborn Township, Grant County, SD, on July 9, 1908, to Fred and Anna (Quade) Ferber.
He attended Kilborn #4 country school, completing his elementary education in seven years. Jack was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the first confirmation class taught in English. He also served as trustee.
When his parents moved to Corona in 1926, Jack remained to assist his brother, Albert, with the farm.
On Sept. 25, 1929, he was married to Alice V. Hamman, a resident of Alban Township located southeast of Milbank. The Reverend F.W. Wessler performed the ceremony at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank.
Following marriage, the couple took over the farm. They were married for sixty-seven years and had four children. Jack enjoyed farming. He was the Kilborn Township clerk for many years.
Jack was a careful and practical man, both in the farm operation and in fiscal matters. He enjoyed many hobbies over the years. He enjoyed reading books and magazines and following his favorite team, the New York Yankees baseball team, for over seventy years. Pheasant hunting, playing cards, and ballroom dancing, were others. He and Alice attended many threshing bees in SD and MN. They shared two car trips to California and many short trips around the Midwest. They became members of and were active in the Corona Senior Citizens where Jack served as the president.
His wife, Alice, died on July 1, 1997. Jack left the farm in the year 2000 at the age of 92. He lived in an apartment in Milbank before moving to Park Place Assisted Living in 2003 when he required more care. In May 2007 he entered the Golden Living Center where he remained until his death.
Survivors include his four children: Barbara Remund and husband Gene, Brownton, MN; Larry Ferber and wife Darlene, Corona, SD; Susan Bartholomew and husband Don, Princeton, MN; and Raymond Ferber and wife Sheila, Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren and four step grandchildren; and twenty great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; two brothers, Albert and Ervin; six sisters, Ida, Emma, Elsie, Martha, Erma, and Dorothy; two grandsons, Leon and Noel Ferber; and one daughter-in-law, Sharon Behlings Ferber.
