Herman Vangsness

November 10, 1928 — March 7, 2010

Herman (Junior) was born on November 10, 1928 in Ortonville to parents Peter and Hazel (Davis) Vangsness. He grew up in Ortonville and attended school in the area. In 1946, Herman enlisted as a Merchant Marine and spent time in Philippines and Washington State.



After a short courtship, Herman and Helen Larkin were married at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville Minnesota on February 14, 1950. They were blessed with eight children; William, Susan, Nancy, Karen, Debra, Joan, Gail and Steven. Herman and Helen raised their family in homes they took great pride in building.

Herman spent many years as a cabinet maker and carpenter; a profession he truly enjoyed. Together, in 1968 Herman and Helen opened the V-Store in Graceville and operated it until 1979. For 30 years, Herman was employed by the Beaulieu and Larson funeral homes.



Herman’s lap was never empty. He loved rocking his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. If grandchildren were not present Herman could be found entertaining one of his many beloved dogs they had throughout the years. Herman could often be foundattending local auction sales and sharing his treasures with family.



Herman passed away at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota on Sunday, March 7, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen and his parents, Peter and Helen. He was also preceded by a brother, Donald Vangsness, and sisters Helen Schake and Marlys Sherod.



He is survived by his eight children; Bill (Diane) Vangsness and Steve (Lynn) Vangsness, Susan (Phil) Broussard, Nancy (Rick) Malay, Karen (Keith) Stroman, Deb (Dave) Ammerman, Joan (Chuck) Homan, Gail(Royce) Wellendorf.

He is also survived by 21 grandchildren Mike (Melissa), Kelly (Jerry), Jane (Tom), Gretchen (Roee), Noah (Michelle), Rhiannon, Jordan (Maria), Zachary, Brett (Katie), Joey, Charlie, Alexis (Dustin), Brooke, Casey (Jenny), Chantal, Lance, Travis, Troy,Ashley, Amanda, Brittany, and nine great-grandchildren, Hunter,Aurora, Mason, Alex, Larkin, Bennett, Mason, Noa and Brynn.

Also surviving Herman are his brother, Bud (Dorothy) Vangsness, brothers-in-law Jack Montonye, Wilbur (Mary Lou) Sherod , sister-in- law Lucille Vangsness and many nieces and nephews.
