Herman Koch

April 5, 1917 — September 7, 2005

Herman Joseph Koch was born on April 5, 1917, to Peter and Anna (Gengler) Koch in Dumont, MN. There he attended Catholic school, where he enjoyed being the "outlaw." He would wrestle and speak German, upsetting the nuns who would call his mother. As a young boy, Herman enjoyed playing baseball and throwing horseshoes. He entered into the U.S. Army in November 1941, and was stationed with the Battery B-54th Battalion in Camp Callan, CA. After being honorably discharged in January 1946, Herman flew to Minneapolis where he hitchhiked home.



Upon his return, Herman met Lillian Chalupnik in the Graceville CafA�A�. On June 14, 1949, the couple was married at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville, MN. They made their home on the Koch family farm in Dumont. In 1967, Herman and Lillian opened Koch?s Grocery and Gas in Collis, MN. The couple owned and operated the business for many years.



In his spare time, Herman enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching professional wrestling and cheering on the Minnesota Twins.



Herman passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN, at the age of 88 years. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; two sons, Ronald Koch and Robert Koch.



Herman is survived by his children, Diana (Robert) Och of Hackensack, MN; Jeannie Wagner of Spokane, WA; Deborah (Chuck) Walters of Graceville, MN; and Randy (Jean) Koch of Fargo, ND; twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Arens of Jasper, MN; Susie White of Studio City, CA; and Agnes Stagg of Indio, CA.
