Helen Dew

Helen Laura Dew, age 79, of Browns Valley, died July 1st, 2005 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota.



Helen was born in Eden, South Dakota on November 20, 1925, to George Ile and Pauline Katherine (Janisch) Cooper. She was one of six children born to George and Pauline.



On May 19th, 1957, she married William Dew in Madison, MN. Helen and William celebrated forty years of marriage before he died in 1997. They were the parents of six children; Carol, Donald, Debbie, Vicki, Rita, and Donna.



Early in her life, Helen worked as what would be known today as a home health aid taking care of many residents of Browns Valley. She worked as a cook for twenty-five years at various restaurants in the Browns Valley area, most notably the J-House and Traverse Cafe. She has been continually active in the St. Anthony's Church as a Christian Mother. Helen was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than forty years.



Helen was lovingly known to all those she met simply as "Ma Dew". This affectionate nickname was adopted when her children were very young and had persisted throughout her life even to those who never met her.



She enjoyed many activities in the kitchen including baking, canning, and making mints. One of her favorite pastimes in the kitchen was gathering around the kitchen table with family and friends playing cards or eating maple nut ice cream. She was known for her skills as a seamstress sewing everything from doll clothes to clothes for adults. She was always know for looking through craft catalogs and finding new projects to order and make. Helen also enjoyed crocheting and shopping at Wal-Mart.



Helen is survived by her children, Carol Giroux (Darrel Johnson, her special friend) of Wheaton, MN; Donald (Terrie) Dew of Minot, ND; Debbie (Dave) Lutmer of Lismore, MN; Vicki Dew of Willmar, MN; Rita (Terry) Drew of Charlevoix, MI; and Donna Dew of Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; Michelle, Jeremy, Tanya, Cherish, Donald Jr., Cody, Will, Amy and Renee, and five great-grandchildren; Jordan, Seth, Jennifer, Brock, and Arianna, as well as many other nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three bothers, two sisters, and granddaughter Melissa.
