Funeral services for Harold White, age 93, former vocational agriculture teacher in Milbank will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 10:30 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church with the Reverend Janine Werling, officiating. Music will be provided by organist Linda Stengel and vocalist Leslie Stusiak. Interment in the Milbank Cemetery. Mr. White died on Thursday, February 09, 2006 at the Milbank Area Hospital. Visitation will be held on Friday February 10th. from 4 to 8p.m. at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Michael White, Kristine White, Deanna White, Trent White, Marc Hoffman, Megan Nebel, Marty Hoffman, Dan Stusiak, Leslie Stusiak, Jeffrey White, Amber White, and Bradley White. Honorary Pallbearers will be Les and Nancy Bloem and all of "Doc" White's former agriculture students.
Harold Edward White was born on December 9, 1912, on a farm in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, the second of three sons born to Mildred Leary and Raymond White. He attended elementary schools in Roberts and Cadot, Wisconsin, and graduated from Roberts High School in 1931. In June, 1936, he received a Bachelor's degree from River Falls State Teachers College, with a major in Agricultural Education. He also earned a Masters' degree in Education from South Dakota State University.
Mr. White taught two years in Hitchcock, South Dakota, followed by seven years at Lemmon, South Dakota, where he married Jeanette Voigt on August 19, 1940. In 1945, they moved to Milbank where he taught vocational agriculture until he retired in 1977.
Mr. White's professional honors included the Honorary American Farmer degree from the Future Farmers of America. He held various offices in the SoDak Vocational Agriculture Teachers' Association, was named SoDak Vo Ag Teacher of the Year, and was inducted into the Ag Teachers Hall of Fame.
"Doc" White's FFA judging teams frequently won first place at the state level, and represented SoDak in the national contests. Several of his students received the State and American Farmer Degree. The blue and gold FFA trailer, and the FFA Barbecue, and the biannual camping trips to the Black Hills were MHS institutions.
An armchair quarterback, Harold followed the Vikings and the Twins, and until age 90 cheered all the MHS sporting events. He also enjoyed pasture pool, hunting, and no-luck fishing. His most infamous fishing trip was the day his pickup went through the ice in 15 feet of Big Stone Lake.
Mr. White retired after 32 years at MHS and a total of 41 years of teaching agriculture. An active member of the American Lutheran Church, he served on the church council and as an usher. In retirement, he served as the Grant County Zoning officer, and enjoyed being a carpenter and silent partner in the White Kids projects. Also, the County Literacy Council, Meals on Wheels driver, was a past president of the Milbank Area Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors are his six children: Noel (Julayne) White, Corona; Betty Jo White, Manhattan, KS; Dennis (Carol) White, Aberdeen; Mary (Mike) Hoffman, LaBolt; Doris Stusiak, Aberdeen; and Lee (Kari) White of Fulton; and 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. His twin brother, Howard White of Roberts,Wisconsin; two sister and brothers in law; Lila (Harry) Knittel of Mobridge, and Arthur (Virginia) Voigt of Minneapolis and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife; Jeanette on May 8, 2003, his parents, and brother; Russell.
