Gustaf Beck

February 6, 1908 — September 6, 2009

Gustaf Alfonso Beck, the son of Henry and Augusta (Erickson) Beck, was born February 6, 1908 in Taylor Township, Traverse County, southwest of Wheaton, MN. Gust attended country school southwest of Wheaton.

During his younger years his family moved many times. At an early age, Gust, learned what the word “work” meant. He milked cows by hand, did chores on the farm and then did field work. He also helped his dad build rock foundations for farm buildings and houses in town. Gust farmed with his brother, Walter, for a couple of years. Poor crops, poor prices and one year “no crop” farming wasn’t for him. He continued working for farmers in the area and tried farming with his brother-in-law, Amos Jenson, for a year but there wasn’t enough income for both of them.

In 1936, Gust ventured southeast of Graceville, MN and worked for George Tiggeman. In this family, was a hardworking daughter, Marie, cooking for her family and a hired man. Gust put a twinkle in Marie’s eye. Romance was inevitable, and in 1937, Gust and Marie were married in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Clinton by Rev. Charles Wittrup.

Lots of love and no money! Gust and Marie packed up their worldly possessions in the car and drove to Sabinal, Texas where they made their home for awhile. They ran a “Pa and Ma” store which had a gas pump. Marie ran the store and Gust did carpentry. After they sold the store they retired and moved back to Clinton, MN. Gust did carpentry work and helped his brother Erick with farming for many years. Gust helped out widows and elderly with painting interiors or exteriors.

Marie passed away on February 24, 1995. Gust continued living in Clinton until his health failed when he moved to Clinton Good Samaritan Center, later called Clinton Providence Center. Requiring more care, he became a resident at Grace Home in Graceville where he died Sunday, September 6, 2009.

Gust enjoyed fishing and visiting with all his friends and family.

He is survived by his many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and their wives, Walter (Clara), Erick (Clara), Henry (Gladys); sisters and husbands, Florence (Amos) Jenson, Ethel (Foster) Docherty, and Annie Beck.
